‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’ from Dexman

‘Devil Ina Blue Dress’ is the latest genre-bending single from south London based Dexter Sampson, otherwise known as Dexman. Drawing on African influences, Dexman gives us an infectious blend of rap, hip-hop and afrorap which he is beginning to pioneer as an artist. The new single also features the talents of fellow rapper, J Wanza.

As part of the Leftwing movement, there is strong ethos behind the music that Dexman is creating which can heard in other releases such as ‘Mama Don’t Cry’, ‘Never See Us Gunnin’ and ‘Lean On Me’.

Although Dexman may be placed mainly within the box of rap/hip-hop, he has been known to cross into a number of other genres including reggaeton, drill, house and R&B. His evident wide range of influences only goes to prove that Dexman is a master in picking the best elements from any style to augment his own music.

Dexman also has been given invaluable information on the music industry from Corey Johnson, one of the most influential figures within the urban industry, looking after acts such as Nasty Crew, Lady Fury, Maxsta, 15 Family and Blade Brown and more recently being very closely linked with Drake ft Kyla’s huge hit One Dance. From this, it would seem that Dexman is equipped to go far with his music.

Devil Ina Blue Dress has received a brilliant response and after being featured on Link Up TV and Hackney’s Finest, the video received over 40,000 views on the platforms in under a week.

Not shy to the stage, Dexman has performed at both the O2 and Water Margin, alongside other Leftwing movement members, with great reviews, and this has encouraged Dexman to further his career musically.

Upcoming urban rapper, Scrilla, is releasing a new album under his own record label Scrills Monetary Records. Having been described as a “fantastic artist who is abstract in creativity” by Tom Simkins (BBC Introducing), it is no surprise that Scrilla is hotly tipped for success in the UK music scene this 2014.

New release, ‘Turn Me Up’, sees Scrilla showcase his refined song writing skills and musical arrangement to create an ideal club hit. The track embodies the whole vibe of the album, Bangers N Cash, which is filled with fun and upbeat, contemporary music. Produced by Elementree (Young Money, Young Capone, Cuban Linx), ‘Turn Me Up’ has a variety of Dubstep, dance and hip-hop influences to create a rhythmic fusion of chart beats worthy of acclaim.

Scrilla has played at various venues nationwide, gaining considerable media coverage from the likes of Capital FM and RAP City TV. However, his career highlights to date include a live performance at BBC introducing radio, playing to a 10,000 strong crowd at Gran Can Music Festival in Gran Canaria and of course, owning his own record label.

In order to keep his music fresh and unique, Scrilla likes to work with rising producers, engineers and collaborators who can bring innovative ideas and musical influences to keep the music new and exciting. This helps to avoid producing generic sounds that is hard to differentiate between artists and also pushes the boundaries of the urban genre to create something truly eclectic.

Scrilla’s love of music first developed in his early teenage years when his Mum paid for piano lessons, which ignited his desire to learn and produce music professionally. This progressed when he moved to Leicester forming friendships with fellow rappers who encouraged him to write his own material and master the craft.

The musical direction decided and perfected, Scrilla’s new album is a great example of how the talent he possesses has grown and tightened to produce something great.

“The Title ‘Palm Trees’ was adopted from the summer of 2013 when I was looking at holidays, mansions, other countries living etc… Palm Trees were always present in the pictures I saw. I heard the beat and subconsciously thought of Palm Trees, which gave me my structure.” – Skremz

Australian Hip-Hop Artist makes UK Debut!

Could Giovanni ‘Gio’ Agosta, a regular 19 year old from a remote farm on the other side of the world, be the next big thing in Hip-Hop? After listening to his songs, the answer is most definitely yes. With his vibrant yet versatile style, Gio showcases his extremely talented ability to be able to play many instruments as well as freestyle.

Growing up in West Melbourne, Australia, personal losses and life experiences have inspired the raw songs on his new album, as well as being exposed to several diverse genres in music. He has taken his influences, such as Macklemore and Bob Dylan, and incorporated them with his experiences to create this edgy yet intimate sound. His new single ‘Dear Bup’ started out as a poem to his ex-girlfriend, who broke up with him because his dedication to music meant that he didn’t have much time for her. Knowing she would never read it, he created the single.

When writing ‘Real’, Gio said his perception of music was enlightened, ‘I didn’t just want to be a rapper anymore, I wanted to hit the right notes. The album is called ‘Real’ because it seems like people are judged as not being real or their music isn’t ‘real’. I feel like the end verse of my first single Real sums it up “See these days we don’t feel real unless someone else agrees. Because people push you to be a certain way, to act like something, to talk about what they think is the sh*t… I don’t need to rap about drugs, but if that’s expressing myself and it’s important to me, then I should. I can say what I feel, because what I feel is real.”’. Gio has played alongside artists such as M-Phazes (who produced a couple of tracks on Eminem’s latest LP the MMLP2), Butterfingers & Mind Over Matter, and has worked with singer Jimmy Cupples and also has received ongoing support from ARIA Award winning rapper 360 since he came to watch Gio’s headlining show in Melbourne.

Gio is not only incredibly talented within the studio, on the stage is where he truly shines. His producer, Mark Belcastro, comments that “When Gio’s on stage, he steps it up to a whole new level…He doesn’t stand up there and just play his songs, but rather wants people in the crowd to join in and be in the show”.

Looking to get involved in urban clothing labels is yet another innovative idea that Gio has had in order to promote his music, alongside releasing his album for free. In many ways, Gio is like any regular kid, going to parties and socialising with friends, the exceptions being his talent, passion and ambition for music and that one day, he will be inspiring many young musicians just like himself.

Real’ will be released in the UK in early March 2014, and his single ‘Dear Bup’ will be released on January 15th, which you can listen to on SoundCloud here: www.soundcloud.com/gioay/dear-bup
